5-year old Samsung Gear S2 smartwatch is getting an update
When smartphones struggle to get updates after a few months of usage, it may be a surprise to learn that the Samsung Gear S2 is getting a surprise update that aims to improve battery life. The Samsung Gear S2 is a near-5-year-old smartwatch that came out in October 2015, just a few months after the Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 Edge. Version R730AUCU3CQK1 is rolling out for the Samsung Gear S2, and it clocks in at a measly 6.79MB.
Currently, there’s no real way of telling when the update will reach your watch. While the typical way for companies to roll out updates is slowly over time, this update is nothing short of an abnormality (even if it’s much appreciated). You can check for an update by going to your Galaxy Wearable app, going to “Watch software update,” and then tapping “Download and install” if the option is available. Samsung did port the Watch Active 2’s features to older smartwatches back in November, but this seems to be a simple firmware update.
An update for the Samsung Gear S2 is a surprise to be sure, but a welcome one. With devices reaching many years of age at this stage, owners will begin to feel battery deterioration, and a battery life improvement may serve to extend its longevity just a little bit more. Have you gotten the update? Let us know in the comments!
